Are you like many brides that just want to look your best on your wedding day?

Are you looking to lose weight but not through gimmicks and advertising stunts?

Are you tired of thinking about your weight day in and day out and how you’ll look on your special day?

YOU’RE NOT ALONE!

In fact, WE want to look OUR best on your wedding day, too, and we’re not even the ones getting married!

Our western culture puts so much emphasis on our body weight (for good and not so good reasons) that it can be all-encompassing at times, especially when getting married.

It’s not uncommon or bad to want to look your best on your most special day!  But when we become obsessed, is it really healthy?

Because so many brides and grooms deal with the struggle of trying to lose weight before their wedding day, we went to an expert to ask him for advice on strategies and options for a healthy diet.

Meet Dr. Adam Graves, a naturopathic doctor and owner of Colorado Natural Medicine + Acupuncture in Castle Rock, CO.

We have known Dr. Graves for quite some time and appreciate his insight into natural, healthy ways to live our best life.

So when we went to him asking about the best diets of 2018, here’s what we learned:

1. “It’s easy to lose weight short-term, it’s hard to maintain long-term.”

Dr. Graves understands that sure, we can try different things to lose weight quickly, but keeping that weight off (and feeling good!) is what can be most challenging.

His advice is to try a variety of diets (each one for at least one month) until we find a diet that is:

1. effective

2. sustainable

3. encourages us to eat the most vegetables while tasting good!

For a diet to be effective and sustainable, a realistic weight loss regimen involves a loss of 1-3 pounds per month.  Yes, we know – probably not the answer you were hoping for!  However, this slower weight loss can be an indicator of how successful a diet can be long term.

So start now!

2. You can get started by trying a detox.

Unfortunately, unless you are living in nature and growing your own organic food, you probably have toxins in your body.  These toxins take up a lot of energy from your body to keep it running effectively.

This means that instead of burning fat and focusing on a healthy metabolism, sometimes our bodies are working overtime trying to rid our systems of toxins and unhealthy foods, additives, and pesticides.

Yikes!

Starting a detox for a few weeks can not only cleanse your body of these toxins in order to clear the way for weight loss, but it can also help you change bad habits AND your tastebuds to get you started on a healthy path moving forward.

Dr. Graves says there are numerous ways to detox such as:

– sugar free detox (eliminating added sugars)

– meat and dairy detox

– stress detox

– relationship detox

– social media detox

Yes, detoxes don’t have to just be about food and drinks.  Consider other areas of your life that cause stress and encourage weight gain.

3. Go long term with an 80/20 diet.

Not a big dieter or not interested in denying yourself some food and beverage pleasures forever?

Dr. Graves suggests the 80/20 diet.

A diet that he sticks to himself, he simply eats healthy and clean 80 percent of the time and indulges 20 percent of the time.

He likes to stick to a healthy diet throughout the week and enjoy a little on the weekends.  That’s just him, but it’s good inspiration for us all to think about!

This means that it’s important to adhere to a healthy diet working your way up to your wedding.  Yes, especially the week of!  But when it comes to the lobster bisque, the bernaise sauce on your filet, and the chocolate wedding cake – ENJOY!
