My dog, Chloe, is everything to me.

She lights up my day with her snuggles and kisses, makes me laugh with her playfulness and joy, and is always there to comfort me with her love. She brings me so much happiness that having her as a part of special moments in my life is meaningful.

Do you feel the same way?

Is your beloved furry companion an important family member that you would love to have present on your special day?  As fellow animal lovers, we completely understand if you simply can’t resist!

That’s why we have a few tips on how to plan a pet-friendly wedding where both humans and animals can relish in the love and celebration!

  1. Make sure your venue is pet-friendly.

It’s crucial to ask your venue manager if pets are allowed on-site indoors and/or outdoors.  Stipulations may apply such as a pet fee and/or they may have rules or regulations such as designated areas for pets and leash requirements.

Some well known Orlando and Central Florida pet-friendly wedding venues are The Alfond Inn, Isleworth Golf and Country Club, Loews Hotels, The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, The Waldorf Astoria Orlando, and Walt Disney Swan and Dolphin.

2. Decide what role your pet will play.

Will Fido walk with you down the aisle?  Or come scampering up with your wedding rings?  Or maybe even stroll up in a decorated wagon by the flower girls and ring bearer?  There are many ways pets can play a role at your wedding.  We find that taking into consideration the pet’s personality, behavior, and skills are most important when choosing where they’ll shine, noting that if they are shy, special photos with you and your pet may be just the perfect thing.

3. Dedicate a pet-helper.

Keep in mind that it will be important to have a dedicated person managing your pet that day.  Animals can keep good company while getting ready but having someone who will make sure the pet eats, does its business, is presented when scheduled, and is cared for afterward is key.  Hire a pet sitter or ask someone your pet is familiar with to help.

4. Be mindful of both your pet and guests.

Make sure that your floral and decor is dog-friendly.  Certain flowers such as lilies, daffodils, and tulips are toxic to dogs so it’s important to keep that in mind when designing your wedding bouquet, aisle flowers, and any other item your pet could sneak a nibble at (like those chocolate favors!).  Also, some guests may be allergic to pets or afraid of them, so it can be helpful to gently let your guests know on your wedding website, on an invitation, or through family members so they can be prepared.

5. Practice and prepare.

A pet run-through can be a good idea a day or two before for the pet to get comfortable with the surroundings and to see if the role you’ve selected for them will work as you envision!  But pets can also be unpredictable so make sure some of their favorite treats or toys are on-hand.  Just try to stay flexible with not too high of expectations!
